Around 1:30 p.m. local time Sunday (6:30 p.m. ET), “a terrorist armed with weapons opened fire on a bus and vehicles in a parking lot near Jerusalem’s Old City,” police said in a statement.
Two Americans are being treated at Hadassah Medical Center and three at Shaare Zedek Medical Center, according to hospitals. Hospitals said at least two of the injured Americans were tourists. Israeli media first reported that the four American victims were tourists and members of the same family.
According to emergency services, two of the victims were listed in critical condition, while the other six victims suffered mild and moderate injuries. One of the injured was pregnant and underwent an emergency caesarean section. According to Shaare Zedek Hospital, mother and child are in critical condition.
The US Embassy in Jerusalem said it was “shocked and saddened” by the attack. He confirmed that US citizens are among the victims and that they are gathering more information.
“We strongly condemn all acts of terrorism and actions aimed at escalating tensions,” an embassy spokesperson said in a statement to CNN.
“Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the victims and we wish them all a speedy and full recovery,” the statement said.
US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides also condemned Sunday’s attack. “Strongly condemn the terrorist attack outside the Old City of Jerusalem. I pray for the speedy recovery of all innocent victims,” Nides said in a tweet.
“Deeply saddened to confirm that Americans were injured in this attack. I have spoken to the families and keep them in my prayers. I am continuing to monitor the situation,” he said.
Nides was confirmed as US ambassador to Israel in November 2021 and is married to Virginia Mosley, CNN’s executive vice president of editorial for the network’s US operations.
The shooter fled the scene with security forces, the Shin Bet and the IDF in pursuit. A helicopter from the Israel Police’s aerial unit assisted in the search, police said.
Later, the accused turned into a police officer. A police spokesperson said that the weapon he was carrying was seized.
A security source told CNN that the suspect is an Israeli national from East Jerusalem.
He was not known for any terrorism-related crimes, but had a criminal record and spent time in prison, a security source told CNN.
Sources said the suspect — whose identity was not released — was born in 1996.
Israeli media have described him as a Palestinian with Israeli citizenship.
Police and forensic investigators have launched an operation at the scene to investigate the attack, police said.
Sunday’s shooting comes after dozens of Palestinians were killed in hostilities in Gaza last weekend. A ceasefire between Israel and the Islamic Jihad militant group in Gaza was announced last Sunday.
